The Bean, Chicago River, Art Institute, Girl and the Goat – Chicago, IL

I lived in Chicago for a few years for school and I love the city.  When I can, I try to head back to see my friends, eat at the great (new and old) restaurants, hang out in the neighborhoods, etc… Here are some Chicago sights, restaurants, and random fun pics…

The Bean - South West View of the City

Bean Reflections

Millennium Park

When it was warm out, I used to hang out in Millennium Park on the grass.  My favorite grassy spot is on the Great Lawn.  In the summer, there are free shows and having drinks on the lawn is ok. (Please check this though…)  In the winter, the ice rink is set up for some outdoor ice skating.

From Michigan Ave., you can see a giant bean-shaped stainless steel sculpture nicknamed “The Bean.”  I love checking out the reflections in the Bean.  It seems like from almost every angle, the Bean reflects a great view of the skyline.

Chicago River - Dearborn and Wacker

Chicago River

The Chicago River provides great photo ops.

Random thought:  When Conan O’Brien was still on NBC, he taped a few Late Night with Conan O’Brien shows in Chicago.  The Chicago River always reminds me of a segment he did with Mr. T where they went on a romantic canoe ride down the River.  Conan = comedy gold.

My Secret Garden to the South of the Art Institute

 Art Institute of Chicago

The Art Institute of Chicago is a fine art museum located just south of the Bean.  The permanent collection includes a large number of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art.  My favorites rooms in the Art Institute are the rooms that house the Renoirs and the Monets.  Classic.

I always liked Renoir’s Lunch at the Restaurant Fournaise but on this last visit, I noticed that they look like hipsters. 🙂

South of the Art Institute, there is a garden.  In the summer, those trees are blooming and the fountain is on.  It’s a great spot to hang out.

Crazy Busy @ Girl and the Goat

End of the night at Girl and the Goat

Girl and the Goat

So I only heard great things about Girl and the Goat.  They are booked solid for the month but they did have a 10:45pm table for 4 available on Thursday.

Background:  Chef Stephanie Izard won Top Chef and opened Girl and the Goat in West Loop.

We were at a table, but i noticed there is a ton of different seating areas in the Restaurant:  bar area, patio, and i just read that there is a “almost in the kitchen” table which sounds amazing.

Notables:  They have normal menu and also a menu that the chefs have free reign to throw together that day.  Some of my favorite dishes are the goat pappardelle, pork belly, and grilled octopus.
